Here are the links for some of my favorite things, and the people who make it possible for me to live the pin-up life from my home in Canada.
The Drunken Sailor – The store that started it all for me. Awesome staff who make you feel beautiful no matter what you wear.
Blame Betty – Calgary, Alberta’s premiere pin-up and rockabilly destination. Great customer service and shipping. Also have books, home accessories, and everything in between.
Rowena – A legendary player in the pin-up and rockabilly scene in Edmonton, Alberta’s Old Strathcona district. They’ve been open for closer to two decades, and have one of the widest selections of pin-up fashions and accessories. Currently the only home I know of for the Canadian-made brand Cherry Velvet. 🙂
Pin Up Girl Clothing – The official website of the brands Charity, Laura Byrnes, Pinup Couture, Dixiefried Clothing, and Deadly Dames – some of the most common brands in the industry right now. Probably best to try to find these outfits at a Canadian shop first, or ask your favorite retailer to try to bring them in. Be prepared to pay for the shipping and duty to Canada if you order from them directly, but as for customer service and speedy delivery, I’ve never seen a company so awesome.
The Jasmine Room Boutique – A quaint shop in Lethbridge, Alberta that carries a selection of pin-up outfits and accessories. Love their collection of purses from Pin Up Girl Clothing. Plus, you can also pick up other things to make your home more vintage, find a gift for a loved one, and get some awesome loose tea!
Aprons by emilyrose – Emily Shimnowski’s awesome collection of vintage-style aprons, including fun ones based on the characters of Sailor Moon. Based out of Winnipeg, MB.
Make-up and Skin Care
Besame Cosmetics – Vintage make-up leaders. Makes awesome retro lipsticks and powders, along with providing plenty of pin-up inspiration through their website and Facebook page. Available at the Drunken Sailor, Blame Betty, Rowena, and through their website.
OPI Nails – The best for quality red nail polish in every color imaginable. Period. Available at most drug stores, hair and nail salons in Canada.
Baiden Mitten – Awesome tool for helping to achieve smooth pin-up skin. Recommended by Pin Up Passion’s Sorelle Amore. Love this thing – my skin actually begins to “itch” for me to use it if I go more than a week without doing so.
Katy Perry Lashes Created by eylure – The nicest false eyelashes I’ve ever used; recommended to me by the awesome Katt Panic of Katt Panic Makeup Artistry. Available at drug stores across Canada and at Claire’s.
Duo Striplash Adhesive – Don’t bother using the cheap adhesives that come with false eyelash kits; even the Katy Perry ones. This is the ultimate in lash glue. I like the white/clear as it dries invisible – good for eye make-up newbies. 🙂 Available at most Canadian drug stores.
Tish and Snooky’s Manic Panic – The easiest way I know of to maintain an intense color like vibrant pinky-red at home between colorings. Plus the customization options are endless! Available at Canadian drug stores, Wal-Mart, and Sally Beauty Supply.
Books and Magazines
Pin Up America Magazine – THE publication for the latest on all things pin-up, burlesque, and rockabilly around the world. Available at select Indigo/Chapters stores.
Shoot Sexy: Pinup Photography in the Digital Age by Ryan Armbrust – A great resource for aspiring pin-ups and pin-up photographers. Although it focuses more on the technical aspects of digital photography, it has useful information on posing, prop and costume ideas, and all-around eye candy.
Dressing Marilyn: How a Hollywood Icon Was Styled by William Travilla by Andrew Hansford with Karen Homer – An insightful coffee table book showcasing the incredible work done by William “Billy” Travilla for this ultimate pin-up icon. Technicolor on paper – ’nuff said.
Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist by Tim Federle – A fun book featuring alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic beverages, and snack foods based on the names and stories of famous pieces of literature. A great way to introduce some fun and laughter into your next cocktail party.
Missy/Ink Magazine – An awesome Canadian tattoo/alternative/pin-up magazine made BY women FOR women.
Cherry Bomb: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Better Flirt, a Tougher Chick, and a Hotter Girlfriend–and to Living Life Like a Rock Star by Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna (Carrie Borzillo) – A fun book full of tips and articles from music journalist Carrie Borzillo and other celebrities showing you how to embrace your wilder, stronger side without having to become a headliner in the National Enquirer the next day. 😉
How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World: The Art of Living with Style, Class, and Grace by Jordan Christy – Another insightful guide inspired by the beauty, class, and awesomeness of the great Audrey Hepburn, showing how we can bring back some of that awesomeness in our modern world.
