As much as makeup is a big part of the pin-up life, basic skin care is even more important. And it’s not just the skin on the face that needs attention. Arms, legs, neck, back… all of it matters! And if you’re anything like me, places like the back of the upper arms are more sensitive to touch than the face is, so of course you want to keep them clean and extra touchable, right? 😉
Now, I know this is going to shock some of you, but hear me out. I was introduced to this line of products a while back, and I have found their items a nice treat among the myriad of things out there. Plus, they are a proudly owned and operated CANADIAN company! What more could you ask for, right? The thing is that… you’re not going to find their products on the shelves of Shoppers Drug Mart or any other regular Canadian retailer anytime soon. My friends, let me introduce you… to SHUNGA Erotic Art.
…Okay, you can pick your jaw up off the floor now. For all you students of the love arts, you probably already know that Shunga is a term for an ancient Japanese erotic art form that reached its popularity during the Edo period. A very explicit erotic art form in fact. Inspired by that tradition, cosmetic success stories Sylvain Séguin and Manon Vallée decided to create a new line of intimate cosmetic products in the year 2000, but designed for couples. And for those concerned with seeing erotic images on their packaging, don’t worry: most details of nudity have been removed from the drawings, all the while maintaining the heart of the original art form. There are a lot of great products that you can share with your partner from their line that I will talk about at a later date, but that’s not all they have to offer.
Released in Exotic Fruits and Sensual Mint, the SHUNGA Erotic Art Bath and Shower Gels are a great product you can use during intimate moments and as a daily body cleanser. Loaded with almond oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, safflower oil, and Vitamin E, they are a treat to the body, and I have been amazed at how soft they have left my skin in the last while. I’m a sucker for mint too, and the Exotic Fruits scent definitely makes me feel like a tropical oasis has blossomed in my bathroom. And the fun part? They are EDIBLE. They are meant so that if you happen to get some in your mouth or your partner kisses your skin, it’s okay. They retail for about $22.00 CAN a bottle, but you get 16 FL ounces of the stuff, and you don’t need too much of it. Plus, for anyone concerned with contact with gluten, all SHUNGA Erotic Art products are gluten-free.
And now the drawbacks. Many SHUNGA products are sugar-free too, but they end up using aspartame instead. I don’t know if there are any health concerns with using aspartame externally on your skin, but for anyone who is against its use, this may not be the product for you. Also, depending on your preference, the products may have too strong of a scent for your liking. The Exotic Fruits one definitely has a major banana smell if that turns you off. And because of the oil content and the use of glycerin, this shower gel may not be the best for people trying to deal with body acne—unless you’re using a strong product like benzoyl peroxide to counter balance the effects. Lastly, you may want to avoid using this product to wash your intimate areas on a daily basis because of the strong fragrances and oils – best to save a simple bar of soap for that.
So where can you find this shower gel if you can’t get it in regular stores? At the moment, SHUNGA Erotic Art products are mostly available in places where adult products are sold. Canadian chains like The Love Boutique, Just For Lovers, and Luv ‘N’ Stuff carry them, but if you are not comfortable with going into an adult store, you can also buy them discreetly online through Pink Cherry and Well.ca. Please be warned that The Love Boutique and Pink Cherry do have explicit images on other parts of their websites, so reader discretion is advised.

Always with love,
