Pin-ups Then and Now: Elly Mayday

Elly Mayday black and white

You know you’ve seen her somewhere, but where? One of the most prolific pin-up and lingerie models today, Elly Mayday is a Canadian jewel in the industry. Flirty… feminine… and plus-size. Yes – you read correctly. And guess what? People love her.

Hailing from Vancouver, BC, Elly is a great advocate for full-figured and alternative beauty. Her measurements were 34-29-44 as of last June, and she proudly calls herself “The Curvy Canadian”. She even had green hair for a while! And with most of her work being in lingerie and swimsuit photos, it tells you that you don’t have to be thin to be successful in the modeling industry, or loved by the general public.

But there’s one thing I admire about Elly Mayday more than anything. Last year, Elly was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. And so, at the age of 25, she underwent chemotherapy and a hysterectomy to save her life. Instead of shying away from the camera while in treatment, this fellow Canuck continued to model – displaying her scars and hair loss for all to see.

I’m sure we all know someone who has been through the ravages of battling cancer, and we know how strong and brave those people are. Having said that, I think Elly’s are some of the most powerful pin-up images I’ve ever seen. It makes me proud to say that I am a Canadian; cut from the same cloth as this beautiful and inspiring woman.

For more information about Elly Mayday, please check out her Official Fanpage on Facebook. In addition, please consider checking out Ovarian Cancer Canada to learn more about detecting ovarian cancer, and what we can do to help find better detection methods, better treatments, and a cure. According to their website, there are 17,000 women living with ovarian cancer in Canada, and it is the most fatal cancer among women. There is no early detection test for it like breast cancer, and sadly, many women that have been diagnosed with it find out when its already reached Stage 4.

We’ve all seen what breast cancer research has done for that type of cancer – think of what we can do if the same amount of time, attention, and money were put towards this?

Can a Cherry Bomb Be A Hepburn in a Hilton World?

Sounds like something the Riddler would say to Batman, doesn’t it? But I admit it is a question that has plagued my mind since embarking on this journey of embracing who I really am. And as we celebrate our rights and freedoms with yet another awesome Canada Day and Independence Day, why don’t we take a look at this further?

A few years ago, I bought Jordan Christy’s book, How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World: The Art of Living with Style, Class, and Grace. Having respect for Jordan as a publicist for a record company, and being a huge fan of Audrey herself, I found the book refreshing, and felt at home with the values and concepts she shared. Heck, I even DRESSED as Audrey Hepburn for Halloween one year, and won a prize at work!

Then I found the world of pin-up. Although some of the more classic styles and looks were making a comeback, the edgier, wilder side seemed more dominant. At first I thought, ‘There is NO way I would wear those outfits.’ Trust me – I used to tell myself that I wouldn’t be caught DEAD in leopard print. But then, every time I went shopping or perused the Internet for pin-up stuff, I found my viewpoint starting to change…

Enter the Cherry Bomb. Written by music journalist Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna (now ex-wife of Chris Vrenna), this book claimed to touch on everything from exercising via mini-trampolines to being the ultimate hostess – rock star style. I admit I was intrigued. Most of the reviews ranged from so-so to so NOT, but something about it drew me in. Deep down, I admitted that there was a bolder side of me I wanted to embrace; something I had quenched for far too long. Would this purple-and-black hardcover be the key? I had to find out.

At first glance, the two books appear to have nothing in common… especially when page 29 of Carrie’s book discusses celebrity pickup tips. 😉 Yet, there are some similarities between these two extremes. Both women discuss exiting a vehicle without exposing things that shouldn’t be seen, and they talk about basic networking techniques that most have forgotten in our day and age. They also talk about dressing well and affordably but still with your own style. Think about it… two women of the music industry with completely different lives and tastes, and yet they still have something in common.

I was raised by an awesome mom, and was taught the importance of treating people with love and respect. I’ve also embraced the morals instilled in me from both my faith and my heart. Do I have to abandon those in favor of my more “fierce” side? Certainly not! And just because I like to wear zebra-print wiggle dresses, watch Star Wars, study astronomy, and practice Kung Fu – does that mean I’m a heathen?  Heck no! In fact, I think the world needs just the right combination of those things: compassion and boldness; love and strength; honesty and integrity. It’s been people like that – burning with righteous indignation, and having the guts to do something about it – that have allowed us to enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today. I would hope at the end of my time on this planet, I could say that I lived the same way.

So I say it again as we remember the great things our ancestors did to build these nations – Can a Cherry Bomb be a Hepburn in a Hilton world? You bet your bottom dollar you can! Have a great holiday weekend everyone!
